Robbie in Ecuador

Have you ever been so bold as to truly ask yourself, “Why do I do what I do?” Why are we so hesitant to ask this simple yet powerful question of ourselves when we so freely demand it from faceless organizations, products and businesses? Unfortunately, by avoiding this pivotal query, we are missing the opportunity to tell our story, cast our vision and inspire others.

Simon Sinek, in his book Start With Why, introduced a principle called “The Golden Circle” which he uses to explain a new way of why-centered thinking. In essence,

WHAT: Every single person on the planet knows WHAT they do. The Golden Circle

HOW: Some people know HOW they do WHAT they do. HOWs are often given to explain how something is different or better.

WHY: Very few people can clearly articulate WHY they do WHAT they do. By WHY I mean what is your purpose, cause or belief?

Our organization, Global LEAD, provides a personal example of this in practice. Each of our executive staff members wakes up each day dedicated to our mission: to transform the trajectory of individuals’ lives through leadership, service and personal development. By leading transformative experiences, we believe we can change lives, impact communities and create a better world. It just so happens that right now we take college students on adventures abroad.

Starting with “why” works in politics, for-profit companies and especially with people. Those who start with “why” and seek an honest connection never manipulate, they inspire. And the people who follow them don’t do so because they have to; they follow because they want to.

So, next time you’re in a job interview, first date or other interpersonal situation, don’t tell someone what you do. Rather, look them in the eyes, speak from the heart and let them know why you do what you do. This will immediately set you apart and move others to believe in you as well.

So, why do you get out of bed every morning?
