Hana Polizzotto, a sophomore at Wake Forest University, describes her favorite things about Cape Town. I think we’re starting to see a trend of the most loved aspects of this city!
1) The sunsets
Each day the sunset looks different. Some nights the sunset is bright, full of different hues of red and orange. Other nights, the sunset darker, with lots of different shades of purple and blue mixed in.
2) There are miniature penguins living in South Africa…
and they are just about the cutest things I have ever seen. There are lots of them living on Boulders Beach. I went there, along with Cape Point, on Monday. The views of the coast were incredible (coming from a girl that grew up in Southern California).
3) The food
When I first arrived in Cape Town I was told I needed to try Ostrich meat. I was a little skeptical, but tried it anyways. The verdict- it is delicious! It tastes just like steak.
4) The hike to Table Mountain
This was a lot more intense than I thought it would be! One of the hardest hikes I have ever done, but so worth it. From the top of Table Mountain you can see all of the city of Cape Town and the beautiful Atlantic Ocean.
5) I am capable of creating my own blend of wine
I do not want to take too much of the credit (one of the members of my group basically told me what to do), but in the end I created a delicious wine blend. I loved learning about the wine lands of South Africa, and (of course) trying all the varieties of wine.
6) My tour guide at Robbins Island
I learned so many incredible things on this tour. There were many different narratives told, but one short story I would like to share is about my tour guide. He was a prisoner on Robbins Island during the 1960s and 70s. He worked in the kitchen during the hunger strikes. So while everyone was starving to death, he had to starve along with them while cooking food all day. I could not even begin to imagine what kind of strength that must have taken.
7) The people
The people here are some of the kindest people I have ever met. There are so many people with different stories, perspectives, and backgrounds. I wish I had more time here to learn them all.
